Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain at low cost the subject sintered compact improved in wear resistance, chipping resistance, toughness and impact resistance by sintering with hot pressing technique or hot hydrostatic pressure treatment without the need for an ultrahigh pressure apparatus.

CONSTITUTION: The objective sintered compact containing ≥10vol.% of a composite rigid phase where the grains of a rigid phase consisting of boron nitride of cubic system and/or wurtzite boron nitride are entirely covered with a monolayer or multilayer film consisting of at least one kind selected from respective nitrides and borides of Nb, Ta, W and Cr and mutual solid solutions thereof with the film ≥5 in mean layer thickness. This sintered compact can be produced at low cost by hot pressing technique or hot hydrostatic pressure treatment, also having such an advantage as to be improved in breaking toughness by ca.32-59% compared to conventional analogous sintered compacts.
