PURPOSE: To enable the motor of a reel to generate the optimum electromagnetic braking force required at the time of taking up a tape around the reel.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of braking means 6A-6C and 8A-8C are connected in parallel with the winding of a motor. The value of the braking resistance of the means 6A-6C and 8A-8C are set so that the electromagnetic braking forces of the means can become weaker in the order of the means 6A, 6B, and 6C and 8A, 8B, and 8C. The inertias JS and JT at the time of taking up a tape around a take-up reel are respectively calculated against a supply and take-up side reel motors 2S and 2T and the combination of the braking means used at the time of taking up the tape is selected on the basis of the calculated inertia values. At the time of calculating the inertias JS and JT, the size of the used cassette is also taken into account. Therefore, the reel motors 2S and 2T can be braked with the optimum electromagnetic braking forces.
