Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide a branching ratio variable optical fiber coupler with less transmission loss which requires no energy for holding the branching ratio in the state where the branching ratio is changed, and is never deteriorated by branching ratio changing operation. CONSTITUTION:The circumference of the optical coupling part 3 of an optical fiber coupler consisting of two optical fibers 1, 2 is covered with a photochromic medium 4. The optical power from a monitor light source 6 entered to one optical fiber end 1 is branched in the optical coupling part 3. When an isomerized light lambda or lambda from a photochromic reaction light source 7 provided on the other optical fiber end 2 is radiated, for example, for a fixed time, the ratio of optical isomers in the photochromic medium is changed, and the diffractive index of the circumferential medium is changed to change the branching ratio.
