To provide a CNT surface modification method for controlling a modification amount at the surface of and in the inside direction of a carbon mesh constituting a CNT and to provide a CNT in which the modification amount is controlled by using a modifying agent which is easy to handle.
The surface of a carbon nanotube is modified by charging the carbon nanotube and nitric acid into a vessel and keeping the temperature in the vessel at 374.0°C or higher and the pressure in the vessel at 22.1 MPa or higher. The CNT has alcoholic hydroxy groups and ether groups on the outmost surface. In other CNT, a plurality of the carbon meshes from the surface of a multi-wall carbon nanotube, in which the carbon meshes are layered coaxially and in multiple layers, has alcoholic hydroxy groups. In other CNT, a plurality of the carbon meshes from the surface of a multi-wall carbon nanotube, in which the carbon meshes are layered coaxially and in multiple layers, has ether groups.
