Abstract:

To provide a highly active catalyst for an electrode of a fuel cell formed by carrying metallic fine particles on a carbon material.

The catalyst for the electrode of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell is formed by carrying metallic fine particles on the carbon material, and the carbon material satisfies formulas (a) to (d) at the same time. (a) Nitrogen adsorbing specific surface area (SBET; m2/g): 200≤SBET≤2000; (b) a ratio of basic functional group amount (B; meq/g) to SBET: 0.5≤B/SBET≤8; (c) a ratio of total acidity (TA; meq/g) to SBET: 0.05≤TA/SBET≤2; and (d) a ratio of basic functional group amount B to total acidity TA: 2≤B/TA≤15.
