Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a new process for producing a 1,3-diol and a 3- hydroxyaldehyde from an epoxide.

CONSTITUTION: A combination of an epoxide with carbon monoxide and hydrogen is brought into contact in the presence of a rhodium-contg. catalyst compsn. effective to promote the hydroformylation of the epoxide under conditions effective to form at least one of a 1,3-diol and a 3-hydroxyaldehyde. The contact is carried out in the substantial absence of a promoting amt. of alkali metallic cations and at least a part of the rhodium-contg. catalyst compsn. is formed without substantially incorporating the epoxide.
