To provide ceric oxide in which the reduction of specific surface area is suppressed under the condition of high temperatures and can suitably be used as an exhaust emission control catalyst, and also to provide a ceria sol suitable for production of the above ceric oxide and a method for production of the sol.
The ceria sol is a dispersion in which the aggregates of primary ceria particles having mean particle size of 1-3 nm are dispersed in a dispersant. The aggregate has a mean grain size of 30-50 nm, and has a botryoidal appearance in which the primary ceria particle exists like a grain of grapes. The method of producing the ceria sol comprises a hydrolysis process for generating a nuclear ceria by hydrolyzing a cerium salt, and a nuclear ceria growth process for growing the nuclear ceria by hydrolyzing separately prepared cerium salt in the coexistence of the nuclear ceria.
