To provide a centering and positioning device capable of easily and accurately centering an object to be positioned and a method of centering and positioning the object using the device.
This centering and positioning device 10 comprises a pair of holding members 34A, 34B pressingly holding a work W from the axial both sides. A centering and positioning jig 12 comprises: spherical projecting guide parts 30A, 30B disposed on the axis of the workpiece W and secured to the both end centers of the workpiece W in the axial direction; and recessed accepting parts 32A, 32B so disposed on the pair of holding members 34A, 34B as to be opposed to the projecting guide parts 30A, 30B and engaged with the projecting guide parts 30A, 30B. One recessed accepting part 32A and the other recessed accepting part 32B are disposed on the same axis. Since the workpiece W is pressingly held by the pair of holding members 34A, 34B, and the projecting guide parts 30A, 30B are guided and supported by the recessed accepting parts 32A, 32B, the axis of the work W is aligned with the axes of the pair of recessed accepting parts 32A, 32B.
