PURPOSE: To set an erased area finely and to print additional characters as a positive image by applying a specific potential to the surface of a photosensitive drum selectively through a liquid crystal shutter.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of the photosensitive drum 9 is charged electrostatically to the uniform high potential by a charger 23 and when this high potential surface is irradiated with light from an original,the surface potential varies according to the intensity of the irradiation, so that a latent image of the potential distribution corresponding to the image is formed on the surface of the drum 9. Then, an eraser 24 consists of the liquid-crystal shutter and a no-image area on the surface of the photosensitive drum 9 has an erased image area irradiated with the light selectively to lower the potential of the part to the potential of a white level. Further, the eraser 24 perform character print processing so as to hold a character part in a specified area on the original at a black level and the limited area at its periphery at the white level.
