The self-propelled vacuum cleaner can perform comfortable cleaning with low power consumption and at low noise by operating a side brush only while cleaning the vicinity of a wall or an obstacle to improve the dust-collecting property in cleaning of a place where dust is accumulated easily but stopping the operation of the side brush when cleaning the other places. A judgment detection part 15 detects approach of the wall or the obstacle based on a detection signal from an obstacle detection part 14. According to the detection of the approach, the judgment detection part 15 instructs rotation at the place, changing of a moving direction or travelling near the wall to a travel navigation part 16. The judgment detection part 15 outputs instruction of driving the side brush only during rotation and travelling near the wall and stopping the side brush during the other straight moving to a side brush driving part 11.
