To provide a cleaning device which can stably clean an image carrier without causing a turn-up in a cleaning blade.

A cleaning device 16 is equipped with a cleaning blade 22 engaging with an image carrier 11 and a cleaning auxiliary mechanism 23 disposed on the upstream side of the cleaning blade. The cleaning auxiliary mechanism 23 has a cleaning brush 24, a toner recovery section 27 which receives toner 17 removed from the image carrier 11, and a toner holding section 28 which receives the supply of the toner 17 from the toner recovery section 27. The toner 17 in the toner holding section 28 is supplied through the cleaning brush 24 to the image carrier 11 for the purpose of lubrication of the cleaning blade 22 by utilizing the difference of the intermolecular forces of the toner 17 and the cleaning brush 24 and of the toner 17 and the image carrier 11.
