PURPOSE: To provide the titled compsn. having excellent corrosion resistance, retorting resistance, and flavor retention when applied to the welded side seam of can bodies, by incorporating epon esters with resol-type phenolic resins.
CONSTITUTION: Bisphenol-type epoxy resins having an epoxy equivalent of 165W 1,000 are condensed with a dibasic acid such as succinic or adipic acid to yield epon esters having an average MW of 2,000W15,000. Then, 40W90pts.wt. said epoxy ester is blended with 10W60pts.wt. resol-type phenolic resin yielded by condensing phenols with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst and then esterifying said condensate with alcohol. EFFECTThick film of about 40W60μ formed on the welded side seam of can bodies causes no drawbacks such as blistering, cracking, or peeling. Retorting resistance of the film is favorable and the flavor of the contents are well retained.
