To provide a coating method and apparatus by which coating defects due to deposit of foreign matters (dust) to a web is suppressed, the method and apparatus applying a coating liquid to a web with a coater.

In the method, a coating liquid 16 is applied to a web 12 by forming a bead 16A in a tip end lip 14A of a coater 14 put close to the web 12 and by depressurizing the vicinity of the bead with a depressurizing member 26. An ultrasonic wave is generated by an ultrasonic wave generator 36 installed in the depressurizing chamber 26 to shake off dust deposited on the web 12 by the vibration of the ultrasonic wave and the shaken-off dust is sucked by the depressurizing chamber 26.
