PURPOSE: To enable normal coiling of a strip, which is conveyed to a pinch roll with the tip end curled, by computing the coiled shape of a strip that is coiled on a mandrel in the state of a double bite at the tip end and adjusting the pressing position of a wrapper roll in accordance with the computed shape.

CONSTITUTION: When a strip 1 with the tip end curled is brought in to the pre-stage, it is squeezed to make the state of a double bite at the tip end, and the length L of the double bite at the tip end of the strip 1 is detected by a detector 10 for the double bite at the tip end. By this detected data, the coiled shape of the strip 1 is computed whose tip end coiled on a mandrel 3 is of a double bite, and in accordance with the computed shape, the pressing position of a wrapper roll 4 is adjusted. Consequently, the strip with the tip end curled can be wound normally. Also, since a passing guide 12 is provided on the entrance side of the pre-stage, even the strip with the tip end curled is surely brought in to the pre-stage.
