To easily recognize the disability of new character input for a user by changing the shape of a cursor when the number of characters inputted by the user reaches the maximum acceptable number of characters.
At the time of an input mode for accepting an input such as a character input from the user at a portable telephone set, a control circuit judges whether or not the number of characters inputted by the user reaches the maximum acceptable number of characters allocated to each item of an input buffer memory. While the buffer memory has an allowance in the number of characters to be inputted, a cursor K1 in the shape of a frame only is displayed on the screen of an LCD device but when the number of inputted characters reaches the maximum inputtable number of characters, a cursor K2 in the shape painted out for one picture element is displayed on the LCD device. Thus, the user can easily recognize that no more input is accepted only by watching the shape of the cursor and since the cursor is displayed at all times, even when work is temporarily stopped, input disability is comprehended so that the unwanted input operation can be prevented.
