To provide a compact self-ballasted fluorescent lamp which has higher lamp efficiency than conventional lamps and maintains the rising characteristic at lamp starting at the same level as that of conventional lamps.
The compact self-ballasted fluorescent lamp 1 has an outer bulb 6 encasing an arc tube 2 composed of a curved glass tube 9. The glass tube 9 has a turning portion nearly at the midpoint between both the ends thereof, a first wound part spirally wound from the one end thereof to the turning portion and a second wound part spirally wound around the axis of the first wound part from the turning portion to the other end thereof to form a double helix shape. Mercury as a single substance aside from an amalgam composition is enclosed in the glass tube 9. The glass tube 9 has a nearly circular cross sectional shape and an inner diameter of 7.4 mm. The turning portion of the glass tube 9 is connected through a heat conductive medium 15 to the outer bulb 6.
