Abstract:

PURPOSE: To reduce the cost of devices and contrive to miniaturize the entire body of a CCD by a method wherein charge transfer element regions which perform different functions are formed on the same semiconductor chip.

CONSTITUTION: Charge coupling elements 2, 2... are formed over a bi-dimensional plane on the Si semiconductor substrate 1. The charge coupling elements 2, 2... built in the substrate 1 have the formation of an area sensor I b for a particular function, e.g., image pickup by a pluralty of charge coupling elements formed in the region I a together with the adjacent same kind of charge coupling elemens. A CCD IIb for distance measurement purpose is formed in another different region IIa on the same semiconductor substrate. Likewise, a charge coupling element region IIIb for shape recognition IIIb, color tone recognition IVb purposes, etc. and charge coupling element regions IIIa, IVa for color tone recognition IVb purpose, etc. are formed according to necessity. Here, regarding the regions I a∼IVa of different functions I b∼IVb, the electric signal obtained to the charge coupling element of each functional region is regarded as the output signal for each function purpose by being led out in time sequence according to the clock signal given from the outside.
