To provide a composite material which is lightweight and excellent in mechanical strengths (e.g. compression strength) in comparison with one obtained by prior art and a method for producing the same.
This composite material is formed by integrally bonding many lightweight small pieces 11-16 composed of expanded polystyrene cubes having a bulk specific gravity of 0.2 and a side length of 4 mm to each other with an adhesive film formed by stiffening a thermosetting adhesive material containing an epoxy resin and an acid anhydride hardener. At the intersection 3, branch lines 21-26 of the adhesive films corresponding to the sides of the lightweight small pieces gathers; and the number of intersections from each of which at least 6 branch lines radiate accounts for at least a half of the number of all the intersections.
