A composition for the optical material comprises an organic component and and inorganic component. Furthermore, the composition for the optical material comprises an inorganic particle component composed of yttrium oxide, an organic component having a polymerizable functional group and a polymerization initiator or a curing agent. The optical material is obtained from the composition. The composition for the optical material further comprises a second inorganic component composed of at least one kind selected from a metal (Al, Si, Ti or Zr) alkoxide or its hydrolyzate. The optical material is obtained from the composition. At least one kind selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, an acrylic or a methacrylic ester, an epoxy compound, a sulfur-containing compound and an aromatic-containing organic compound is used as the organic component.
