To obtain a composition for producing a carbon-containing refractory, readily handleable when compounding a carbonaceous powder therewith and excellent in dispersibility by using the carbonaceous powder prepared by powdering a press formed compact of carbon black having specific characteristics as a carbonaceous material in the composition for producing the carbon-containing refractory containing a refractory oxide and the carbonaceous material.
This composition for producing a carbon-containing refractory is obtained by using a carbonaceous powder prepared by powdering a press formed compact of carbon black, produced by press forming carbon black as a carbonaceous material under 2-500kgf/cm2, preferably 5-400kgf/cm2 and having the following range of density in the composition for producing the carbon-containing refractory containing 100 pts.wt. refractory oxide and 5-30 pts.wt. carbonaceous material: ρ=8.190×10-3D-3.824×10-3L+0.516 or above and ρ=3.265×10-3D-3.334×10-3L+1.173 or below [ρ is the density (g/cc) of the formed compact; D is the arithmetic mean grain diameter (nm) measured under an electron microscope; L is the DBP oil absorption volume (mL/100g)].
