To provide a compound type data recording and reproducing device capable of automatically determining a dubbing direction.
The compound type data recording and reproducing device comprises: a first driving means capable of reading/writing data from/to a detachable 1st recording medium; a second driving means capable of reading/writing data from/to a detachable second recording medium; and one operating means which is operated by a user to instruct dubbing between the first recording medium and the second recording medium. In such a configuration, recording propriety of the first recording medium and the second recording medium is decided (S4, 6, 8, 10, 14, 16) according to the operation of the operating means by the user. Then, on the basis of a result of the decision, the dubbing direction is determined, and the dubbing of the data is started from one medium to the other medium according to the determined dubbing direction (S12, S18, S20).
