PURPOSE: To prevent the inclusion of the mold powder that arises near the corners of a mold for continuous casting by electromagnetic agitation and to obtain an ingot of high quality having no surface layer defects by chamfering the corner parts of the mold thereby forming an arc shape on the inside wall surface.
CONSTITUTION: In a continuous casting installation, the corner parts of a mold vessel 10 of a square or rectangular shape in section provided with an electromagnetic agitating means are formed to inside wall surfaces 10c of an arc shapes which are chamfered across the adjacent two wall surfaces 10a, 10b. Then the inclusion of mold powder into the molten metal near the corners of the mold is prevented in the stage of continuous casting of the molten steel in the mold under agitation by the electromagnetic force of an electromagnetic coil. Thus the ingot having no surface layer defects and having excellent internal quality is produced.
