Title:
CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION OF BENZYL ALCOHOL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3835871
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the production of common salt and the load on wastewater due to no use of sodium carbonate and produce an industrially useful benzyl alcohol by carrying out hydrolysis of benzyl chloride with water at a high temperature.
SOLUTION: (A) Benzyl chloride and (B) water at 1:(10-70) molar ratio are continuously fed into a reactional vessel R equipped with a separator T1 and reacted until the conversion rate of the the component (A) attains 30-90% and the reactional product discharged from the reactional vessel R is then separated into an aqueous phase and an organic phase. The separated organic phase is subsequently separated into the component (A) and crude benzyl alcohol in the first distilling plant D1 and the component (A) is circulated to the reactor R. The crude alcohol is purified in the second distilling plant and highly purified to produce a bottom phase containing by-products. The aqueous phase, obtained from the separator T1 and containing dilute hydrochloric acid is placed in an extractor Ex and treated with a solvent and the solvent is then removed in the third distilling plant D3 and returned to the extractor Ex. The bottom phase produced in the distilling plant D3 is fed to the distilling plant D1 to recover the resultant benzyl alcohol.
