To provide a continuously variable transmission for a vehicle, switchable forward-backward, transmitting the output of the continuously variable transmission by decelerating.
When a ring gear 34 is connected to a transmission housing 42 (non- rotating member) by a connection switching device 40 and simultaneously a carrier 38 is switched to be connected to a large-diameter gear (output member) 46, a planetary gear device 30 decelerates the output of the continuously variable transmission 10 and transmits the rotating force in the forward rotating direction to the large-diameter gear 46. When the carrier 38 is connected to the transmission housing 42 and simultaneously the ring gear 34 is switched to be connected to the large-diameter gear, the planetary gear device 30 decelerates the output of the continuously variable transmission 10 and transmits the rotating force in the backward rotating direction. Thus, forward-backward switching can be performed and the output of the continuously variable transmission 10 is decelerated and transmitted, whereby the planetary gear device 30 functions as the forward-backward switching device and the reduction gear, so that the need of using the reduction gear is eliminated to reduce the size of the continuously variable transmission 10 for a vehicle as compared with the conventional one.
