To provide a control device for a diesel engine that sufficiently suppresses generation of white smoke without posing a feeling of discomfort to a driver.
The control device for a diesel engine comprises a first cam and a second cam switchable for use in driving an intake valve, retards the valve opening timing of the intake valve by the first cam from the valve opening timing of the intake valve by the second cam, designs the first cam to open the intake valve after an exhaust valve is closed, uses the first cam if an engine temperature is below a given temperature and an engine speed is below a given speed (Step 101), and uses the second cam if the engine temperature is not lower than the given temperature (Step 100) or the engine speed is not lower than the given speed. Even if the engine speed is not lower than the given speed, the first cam is used in a no-load state (Step 102).
