To produce a catalyst which is highly active in a reaction of a nitrile with water and highly selectively synthesizes an objective amide by reducing precursors containing copper, alumina, no malachite, and no aluminum hydroxide with hydrogen in the presence of a solvent.
In production of amides by reaction of a nitrile with water in the presence of a copper catalyst, the copper catalyst used for the production is produced by reducing precursors containing copper, aluminum, no malachite, and no aluminum hydroxide with hydrogen in the presence of a solvent. The precursors preferably have hydrotalcite-like phase having the formula [AxB10-x(OH)20](10-x)+[Cn-(10-x)/n].mH2O (wherein A stands for a divalent metal ion, B for a trivalent metal ion, C for an n-valent anion, X for a real number between 5 and 8, (m) for a real number between 0 and 10) and contain copper as A and aluminum as B.
