Abstract:

PURPOSE: To allow simultaneous transmission and receiving of transverse wave and surface wave using a single probe by providing a transducer producing a sound level higher than a predetermined level wherein the ultrasonic beam spreads with a directivity higher than a predetermined angle.
CONSTITUTION: An oscillator 7 in a transducer 3, producing a sound pressure having a central sound pressure of -6dB or above and the ultrasonic beam spreads with a directivity of 4.5° or above, is oscillated at high frequency. The ultrasonic wave propagates on an ultrasonic propagation member 4, a contact medium 8, and a butadiene rubber tire 2 and impinges on a steel plate 5 at an incident angle of about 28.5° on the central sound pressure angle. It is refracted at an angle of about 70° (traverse wave) -900° (surface wave) and propagates through the steel plate 5 before it is reflected from a defect 6 and received by the transducer 3 through a reverse path. Since the traverse wave and the surface wave can be simultaneously transmitted and received by means of a single probe, the surface defect and the inner defect of the steel plate 5 can be detected using a single probe.
