To provide a cutting device 10 for automatically inspecting the state of a cutting edge of a cutter 138.
This cutting device 10 cuts a sheet-like medium 170. The cutting device 10 is provided with: a carriage 130 reciprocatively moving in the direction parallel to the surface of the medium 170 and intersecting a carrying direction at a position facing to the medium 170; and the cutter 138 held in the carriage 130 to advance/retreat in relation to the medium 170 and to rotate in relation to a rotary shaft 132 perpendicular to the medium 170. The device is provided with: a rotation control part 230 for positively rotating the cutting edge of the cutter 138 around the rotary shaft 132; an image receiving element 410 for detecting the optical distribution of a region including the cutter 138 to output a detection signal; and a detecting part 440 for detecting chipping, deformation or wear of the cutter 138 from the output signal of the image receiving element 410 to generate an alarm.
