To provide the subject novel compound that is a specific cyclopentylalkylnitrile and is useful as a floral type perfume that emits powerful, widely diffusible and persistent smell.
This novel compound is represented by the formula (R1-R3 are each H or a 1-3C alkyl; (n) is 0 or 1; and the double lines means a single or double bond), typically 5-cyclopentyl-3-methylpenta-4-en-1-ol. The compound of the formula is prepared as follows: ethyl 5-cyclopentyl-3-methylpena-4-enoate in diethyl ether is dripped into a suspension of lithium aluminum hydride in the same solvent and the reaction mixture is stirred under reflux, further water, and aqueous NaOH solution and water agent are added to the reaction mixture, then the precipitate is separated by filtration and the precipitate is washed with MTBE, the collected organic layer is washed with HCl and brine, concentrated under vacuum and is distilled.
