Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for locating a damage of a structure of concrete, for example, due to earthquake conveniently.
SOLUTION: A shape memory alloy wire 1 of NiTi or a superelastic alloy wire 2 is embedded in concrete 3. When the concrete 3 is damaged due to earthquake or the like, an ultrasonic wave 5 is transmitted through the shape memory alloy wire 1 or a superelastic allay wire 2 from the end part thereof. The ultrasonic wave 5 is reflected from a damaged part (a) and returned back to the end part. Assuming the time required for the ultrasonic wave transmitted through the shape memory alloy wire 1 or superelastic alloy wire 2 from the end part thereof to return back to the end part is T and the propagation speed of an ultrasonic wave through the shape memory alloy wire 1 or superelastic alloy wire 2 is V, the distance L to the damaged position (part a) from the end of the shape memory alloy wire 1 or the superelastic alloy wire 2 can be determined according to a formula; L=(V.T) /2.
