PURPOSE: To obtain a data recording medium possible to write and read by laser by forming a recording layer containing a thiazole type cyanine dye having a sulfonate group.
CONSTITUTION: A recording layer composed of a thiazole type cyanine dye having a sulfonate group represented by formula 1 is provided on a plastic substrate composed of polycarbonate or the like and a reflecting layer composed of a metal is laminated to said recording layer. In the formula 1, Z1 and Z2 are an atomic group for completing an aromatic ring, R1 and R2 are an alkyl group which may have a substituent and at least one of them has a sulfonate group, G is O, S, Se or a vinylene group which may have a substituent, L is a trivalent bonding group generated by connecting a methine group which may have 1, 3, 5 or 7 substituents through the formation of a conjugated double bond, Y+ is a cation for neutralizing negative charge and (m) is 0 or 1. This dye is dissolved in a fluorine-containing compound type solvent to be applied to a substrate.
