To provide a database management system having high response and capable of quickly dealing with the change in the constitution of a data base at the time of preparing a user interface picture for database operation.

A constitution definition storage part 11 stores two kinds of text files, i.e., a database constitution definition file showing the constitution of a database 10 and a table constitution definition file indicating the constitution of respective tables. A user inter face display part 12 generates a set picture 14 to be a interface for an input such as a retrieving condition. The display part 14 refers to retrieving definition files stored in the storage part 11 and displays a table name, an item name, an operator, etc., to be selection candidates as a list. A user can set up a required retrieving condition or reference item by selecting required contents from the displayed list.
