To reduce the computational complexity and a circuit scale at each least level by dividing an inputted bit stream into the auxiliary information and the coding data and analyzing the auxiliary information to control the decoding based on the information that is previously stored in a parameter ROM.
A stream input part 1 of a decoding device outputs the auxiliary information including the header information and the audio coding data to an auxiliary information analyzing part 2 and a decoding part 4 respectively. The part 2 analyzes the auxiliary information received from the part 1 and outputs its analyzing result to a decoding control part 3 and a storage part 6. An MPEG1 header analyzing part 2a analyzes the header information on an MPEG1 audio standard included in the auxiliary information. An MC header analyzing part 2b analyzes the auxiliary information on a part that is extended based on an MPEG2 audio standard, i.e., the multi-channel constitution information serving as the header information on the MPEG2 audio standard.
