To decide a deterioration condition of a storage battery by a simple and convenient method.
In this method for determining the deterioration condition (battery capacity) of the secondary storage battery for supplying electric power to at least a starter for starting up an internal combustion engine, a terminal voltage of the secondary storage battery is measured as an initial terminal voltage in step 2 just before starting up the starter. Then, the terminal voltage V1 of the secondary storage battery is measured continuously (S3) during a period from the time after the first lapse time counted from the starting-up of the starter up to the time before the second lapse time, between the starting-up of the starter and the starting-up of the internal combustion engine in steps 3-6, the measured terminal voltage V1 of the secondary storage battery is subtracted from the initial terminal voltage VO to calculate a voltage difference (ΔV = VO-V1) (S4), a voltage V2 corresponding to an initial internal resistance of the secondary storage battery is subtracted from the voltage difference ΔV (S5), the subtracted value is integrated (S6), and the value continuously integrated over the period from the time after the first lapse time up to the time before the second lapse time, using it as a deterioration index Y, is compared with an electric power capacity data of the secondary storage battery found preliminarily to determine the deterioration condition of the storage battery, in a step 7.
