To provide a device for detecting writable/unwritable setting of data into a memory card, which has a writable/unwritable setting means and can reduce the size and thickness of the body of a memory card.
The writable/unwritable setting piece 4 equipped at a cut-out portion 3 of a memory card body 1 sets a writable/unwritable state of data into a semiconductor memory by selecting any one of a first position where a part of the writable/unwritable setting piece 4 covers a part of the cut-out portion 3 and a second position where it covers the other part of the cut-out portion 3. The outer shape of the writable/unwritable setting piece 4 is formed so that the part covering the cut-out portion 3 is substantially integral with the outer shape of the memory card body 1. When the memory card 1 is inserted into equipment 22, the position state of the writable/unwritable setting piece 4 is detected with a detection switch 21 by using the cut-out portion at the first position or the cut-out portion 3 at the second position, thereby detecting the writable/unwritable setting of the memory card 1.
