To specify the constriction of an exhaust passage and specify the position of a constriction point.
When there is constriction in the exhaust passage, exhaust resistance is increased and so cylinder pressure in an exhaust stroke has a higher value than in the normal condition. In this case, the exhaust resistance is not increased immediately after starting the exhaust stroke, but it is increased when exhaust gas reaches the constriction point, somewhat slower than at starting the exhaust stroke. A rising time for the cylinder pressure in the exhaust stroke is different depending on a distance from a cylinder to the constriction point, namely, slower as the distance from the cylinder is longer. Thus, the position of the constriction point can be specified by detecting the rising time for the cylinder pressure.
