To obtain a new dibiphenyl derivative composed of a specific polymerizable group, biphenylyl and a spacer, and suitable for affording polymer-distributed bright liquid crystal display elements to be driven at low voltages.
This new compound is (A) dibiphenyl-4-ylmethyl methacrylate of formula I or (B) dibiphenyl-4-yl itacolate of formula II. The compound A is prepared by making magnesium act on 4-bromobiphenyl to form biphenyl-4- ylmagnesium bromide which, in turn, is reacted with 4-phenylbenzaldehyde to form dibiphenyl-4-ylmethanol which is then reacted with methacryloyl chloride. While the compound B is prepared by reaction of itaconyl chloride with 4-phenylphenol. These compounds are each used, specifically, as a polymeric precursor or part thereof to form a polymer in a polymer-distributed liquid crystal display element bearing a light-modulating layer containing both liquid crystal and to polymer.
