Title:
DICHROIC DYE FOR LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT USING THE SAME
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3771071
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a dichroic dye exhibiting a structure having an electron- attractive group and an electron-donative group and capable of realizing bright and clear color display.
SOLUTION: This dichroic dye has a structure coupling at least two aromatic n-membered rings (n is ≥4) each having at least one atom other than C atom and having an electron-attractive group in C atom other than the above coupling part of either one n-membered ring and having an electron-donative group in C atom other than the above coupling part of the other n-membered ring. The dichroic dye preferably has a structure, e.g. represented by the formula (A is an electron-attractive group such as CF3 or CCl3; B is an electron-donative group such as OH or the like; and D and E are each O, S or the like). Especially, in the structure of the formula, D and E are preferably each S. This liquid display element capable of displaying bright and clear color can be obtained by dissolving the dichroic dye into a liquid crystal material to form a liquid crystal layer. Furthermore, compounding ratio of a dichroic dye to the liquid crystal material is preferably 0.1-10 wt.% e.g. in the case of 10 μm cell thickness.
