PURPOSE: To obtain a separating material having dimensional stbility, particularly non-swelling and to provide an electrolytic cell having small electric power consumption by covering a cathode in the electrolytic cell with this separating material.
CONSTITUTION: This separating material having sheet-like porous state and dimensional stability is a material obtained by combining each of fiber composite materials by heat-induced melting and mutual connecting. In the fiber composite materials, inorganic refractory granular materials divided into extremely fine particles are firmly combined with a polymer substantially on the surface of at least fiber shaped organic polymer so as not to be physically come off from the fiber without the breakage of the fiber. A method for setting the separating material on a cathodic substrate is executed by the following. (a) Slurry of the composite fiber is formed. (b) The slurry is deposited on the substrate by utilizing a pressure difference. (c) The composite fibers are heated and fuse-stuck to form a mat. (d) This mat is cooled.
