To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and a luminaire each achieving high quality by improving the performance of receiving an infrared remote control signal.
The discharge lamp lighting device 10 and the luminaire are mounted on a ceiling surface for controlling an annular discharge lamp to be lit while converting a commercial power supply into high frequency power. A first printed board 11 is mounted with electronic components 13 constituting a discharge lamp lighting circuit part 14, and it is arranged at the center of the annular discharge lamp perpendicularly to the ceiling surface. A light receiving face 21 of a light receiving element 19 for receiving the infrared remote control signal is arranged opposed to a floor surface opposed to the ceiling surface.
