PURPOSE: To quickly retrieve directories and files by diagramming and displaying the hierarchical structure of directories and flies to indicate positional relations of directories and files.

CONSTITUTION: The disk file management system where disk files are managed by the hierarchical structure is provided with a command analysis means 2 which analyzes information of an inputted command, a present position clarifying means 3 which clarifies the present directory and file positions in accordance with the analysis result of the means 2, a disk retrieval means 4 which takes in information of the directory and the file from an external storage device in accordance with the analysis result of the means 2, and a picture generating means 5 which generates a window display picture image in accordance with information from the means 3 and the means 4. Thus, the objective directory is quickly searched, and the hierarchical structure of the whole of directories and the present directory position are quickly recognized.
