PURPOSE: To enable a gradation display by displaying intermediate luminance by using the writing voltage on one side as a light emitting voltage and the writing voltage on the other side as a no-light emitting voltage.
CONSTITUTION: In a display state where full light emission is performed, light emitting voltages are applied across the picture elements and light emission of sufficient light emitting quantities are performed two times per frame in both of 1st and 2nd fields. In the display state of intermediate luminance, the light emitting voltage is impressed upon the picture elements of either the 1st or 2nd field and a no-light emitting voltage is impressed upon the picture elements of the other field and the light emitting quantity per frame becomes less as compared with the display state of the full light emission. Moreover, in the display state of no-light emission, the no-light emitting voltage is impressed upon the picture elements in both 1st and 2nd fields and the picture elements do not emit light during the one frame period. Therefore, three stages of gradation displays of full light emission, intermediate luminance, and no-light emission can be performed.
