Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable continuous and stable measurement of a distance to an object as far as the object is located in a field of view of an image-sensing system by providing a window setting means and a measuring means of determining the distance by using an image signal in a window. CONSTITUTION:An object 5 is imaged on image sensors 3 and 4 by lenses 1 and 2 and converted into digital signals by A/D converters 6 and 7 and these signals are stored in memories 8 and 9. With the screen of a display 11 watched, the size and position of a window can be set by a window forming device 12. A microcomputer 10A samples an image signal at a prescribed time interval, compares the image signal in the window at some time with the image signal at a next time, sets a new window of a size corresponding to a distance in a part wherein the two signals are in the best accord with each other, detects a slippage of the corresponding image signals in the window and determines the distance at the next time. Even when the distance to the object 5 changes and the size of the image varies, accordingly, it is possible to follow the object 5 in a stable manner and to measure the distance without being affected substantially by the background or the like.
