To obtain the subject new compound having excellent glutathione reductase activating action and peroxide eliminating action with low irritation to eyes and useful as a preventive and a curing agent of a disease onsetting by an oxidative stress.
This compound is expressed by formula I [(m) is 0 or 1; when (m) is 0, (n) is 2 or when (m) is 1, (n) is 1; (k) is 0-12; R1 is H, an aryl, a heterocycle group, a 1-12C alkyl or the like; A is a single bond, O-atom, carbonyl or the like; B is a single bond or the like], e.g. 1-(5,7- dimercaptoheptyl)-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)urea. The compound of the formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. a compound of formula II [A1 is a group of A excepting CO-O or the like; B1 is N(R5) or the like (R5 is H, a 1-12C alkyl, aralkyl or the like)] with a compound of formula III (Y is a leaving group) in a solvent in the presence of a base.
