To reduce the size of a cooler by reducing the switching loss of a switching element for controlling the charging/discharging current of an energy storage device added to a drive controller for a vehicle.
An inverter 5 receives a power from the energy storage device 2 or a dc power supply 8 and the energy storage device 2 and drives a motor 6 at power running time. A regenerative power is recovered to the energy storage device 2 or the dc power supply 8 and the energy storage device 2 at the regenerative time. Further, at a stopping or coasting time, the energy storage device 2 is charged by the dc power supply 8, or discharged from the energy storage device 2 to the dc power supply 8. The charging/discharging current of the energy storage device 2 is controlled by switching the switching elements 11, 12. The switching elements 11, 12 operate in a high switching frequency when the current at the charging/discharging time of the energy storage device is larger than a certain set current, and operate in a low switching frequency when the current is small. Further, when power running/regenerative operation is performed only by the energy storage device 2, the on/off states of the switching elements 11, 12 are fixed.
