To provide a drum-type washing machine which can detect failure of a suspension having a damper using a magnetorheological fluid.
A drum-type washing machine including, in an outer case, a drum which accommodates the laundry and is rotationally driven; and a water tank which accommodates the drum, comprises: a plurality of suspensions for attenuating the vibration of the water tank; failure detecting means; and control means for controlling a washing operation. The suspension includes a damper having a shaft which moves integrally with the water tank; a cylinder which moves relative to the shaft; coils held within the cylinder, for generating a magnetic field by the application of current; yokes provided in both sides of the coils; and a magnetorheological fluid filled between the shaft and the coils and between the shaft and the yokes, for increasing attenuation force between the shaft and the yokes by a change in viscosity of the fluid due to the magnetic field of the coils. The failure detecting means is provided for detecting failure of the suspensions, and the control means is provided for determining whether the suspensions have the failure based on a result detected by the failure detecting means.
