Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the new subject compound having a stereostrucure at 1 position of cyclopentene ring useful as a flavoring material having a sandalwood-like fragrance.
SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R is a 1-3C alkyl), e.g. (E)-(R)-2- ethyl-4-(2,2,3-trimethylcyclopent-3-ene-1-yl)-2-butene-1-ol. The compound of formula I is obtained by hydrogenating an (E)-(R)-2-alkyl-4-(2,2,3-trimethylcyclopent-3- ene-1-yl)-2-butene-1-al derivative of formula II with a ruthenium-phosphine complex as a catalyst in the presence of a base or an amine having an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. The compound of formula I is brought to be easily obtained in high yield by this method.
