PURPOSE: To hinder discharging in gaps at the sides not facing by giving a displacement exceeding the critical gap length to distance between the electrode and the work to be processed, in a plane normal to the main processing direction of the electrode and work.
CONSTITUTION: Electrode 1 is mounted on a Z-axis drive heat 30 which is driven by a Z-axis drive motor 9, and drive of Z-axis is controlled by combination of the interelectrode gap servo and the position servo in electric discharge processing. The head 30 stops at the specified position. At this time, the X-Y drive table 33 on which the work to be processed 2 is placed is driven while it maintains the specified interelectrode gap given by a numerical control device 34. The controlled minute gap length is held in gaps at the sides facing while gap length shall be enlarged in gaps at the sides not facing, to a value over the critical discharge gap length.
