PURPOSE: To prevent the heat diffusion of lithium component, reduce secular change, and permit long time service by including aluminum oxide, tantalum pentoxide, or lithium niobate in a thin film which is to cover partially the silica glass tubing surface of a discharge tube.
CONSTITUTION: A silica glass tubing having a hydrogen molecule concentration under 5×1016 (number of molecules/cm3) is shaped into the lamp form to prepare silica glass lamp branks. Either the outer or inner surface of these branks is coated with a thin film of Al2O3, Ta2O5, or LiNbO3 having a thickness 1-500nm by means of sputtering etc. Then an electrode is attached to the branks, and argon in the form of rare gas, mercury, metal halide as light emitting substance are encapsulated to accomplish a metal halide lamp. This permits suppressing the diffusion coefficient of metal halide in the discharge tube, in particular lithium halide, down to 5×10-9, reducing secular change of the light emission spectral distribution, and long time service.
