This electric vehicle controller, which drives and controls an AC electric motor 7 for driving an electric vehicle using the inverters of a VVVF control system, is provided with a speed-detecting means 8 that detects the speed of the AC electric motor 7 and a failure-detecting means 10 that detects a failure of the speed-detecting means 8. When the failure-detecting means 10 detects the failure of the speed-detecting means 8, the control mode of the inverters 5 is switched from a with-sensor control mode 11, in which the detected speed from the speed-detecting means 8 is used, to a speed- sensorless control mode 12, in which the detected speed from the speed-detecting means 8 is not used, to continue controlling the inverters 6.
